Details: 2018 JC exam - Question 1. Get the novel 'Once' by Morris Gleitzman. This is our class novel for third year and it is essential that you have it for class by Wednesday 11th September as we will be beginning study of the book on that day.

Details: 2018 JC exam - Question 3. (You should now have both Question 1 and 3 completed in full.) Please get the exam papers if you have not already done so. Reminder: you need to get the novel ‘Once’ by Morris Gleitzman as soon as possible.

Details:Debate Speech, as discussed in class today: You are participating in a debate on the motion that: ‘The use of all animals in circuses should be banned and zoos should be closed down.’ You must either agree or disagree with this motion. State and develop any two points you would make to persuade an audience attending the debate that your views are correct. (You can look over the guidelines on writing a debate speech by going to the Junior Cycle section of this website and going to ‘Functional Writing’.)

Details:1. Learn the highlighted quotes from ‘Poem for Lara, 10’. (Note: if you are absent, contact a classmate and ask him to send you a picture of the highlighted sections of the poem.) 2. In your copy, write an answer to the following question: You are participating in a debate on the motion that ‘Parents should not be allowed to post images of or information about their children online without the child’s permission’. You must either agree or disagree with the motion. State and develop any two points you would make to persuade an audience attending the debate that your views are correct’. Details:Based on Chapter One of the class novel 'Once', write down examples of effective characteristics of a novel opening. Give examples from the novel to illustrate points. This exercise is to be completed in your copy, using the headings you were given in class.

Details: Finish reading the novel 'Once' tonight. It is essential that you catch up on any missed sections as we will be beginning detailed analysis of the novel tomorrow.

Details: Exercise on Chapter One: On page 74 of the novel, Felix says, 'Once I lay in the street in tears because the Nazis are everywhere and no grown-ups can protect kids from them, not Mum and Dad, not Mother Minka, not Father Ludwik, not God, not Jesus, not the Virgin Mary, not the Pope, not Adolf Hitler.' By that stage in the book, his faith has been severely shaken.

Write approximately two paragraphs entitled 'Hopes and Dreams'. In your piece, you should reflect on (a) what sustains Felix in Chapter One and (b) what shelters him at this point compared with mid-way through the story or at the conclusion of the novel.

1. Identify 2 things that unsettle Felix and explain how his thinking starts to change.

2. Felix has plans to help his Mum and Dad. What are they and what motivates him to take action?
Reminder: Begin revising 'Romeo and Juliet' as we will be returning to analysis of themes etc. in a few weeks.

Details: Prepare this task which we discussed in class today and which you will be writing and re-drafting in class tomorrow and Friday.

Genre: Argument or Persuasion – Short Talk
Length: Approx one page of foolscap
Title: Imagine you are Dan Taggart. Write the text of the talk you would give to a group of young people from town in which you explain to them why you believe your treatment of animals on the farm is sensible and necessary.
Points to note:
• It should be clear that your piece is a talk.
• Introduce yourself.
• Address the audience from time to time
• Make your points clearly and give evidence if necessary
• Be clear and definite in your views but do not insult or attack your listeners.
• Do not quote yourself or quote from the poem!
• Use features of the language of argument and/or persuasion (Rhetorical questions, persuader or pressure words or phrases, inclusive language etc.)
• Make it clear that your talk is coming to an end. You might wish to thank the listeners for paying attention.
• Include a call to action at the end if possible.

Details: Revise the notes and quotes on Seamus Heaney’s ‘The Early Purges’. Don’t forget to bring the novel ‘Once’ to school with you next week as we will be returning to it. You should also begin revision of the plot of ‘Romeo and Juliet’. Revise once scene each night.

Chapter Four.
1. List some of the reasons Felix considers himself ‘lucky’
2. List things you think he could complain about.
3. What indications are there – recognized or missed by Felix - that something is terribly wrong? What explanations does Felix come up with to make sense of things?
Chapter Five.
1. Contrast Felix’s dreams with the reality of what he discovers when he makes it home.
Chapter Six. 1. What changes have taken place in Felix (e.g.: more cautious, fearful of Nazis) and how do they influence his actions?
2. Do you think Felix did the right thing by a)taking Zelda and b) not telling her the truth about her parents at that point?

Details: PORTFOLIO PREP: 1. Read Chapter Seven of 'Once' 2. Plan the writing task we discussed in class toady. You will be writing it into your portfolio in class tomorrow. Writing Task: Imagine you are one of the people on the road. Write the diary entry you might make after your first day of traveling.  Describe the events leading up to your leaving
What did you/could you take?
What do you regret having to leave behind?
What do you take consolation from? What comforts or consoles you a little bit?
Remember to reflect on the events.
Use narrative and descriptive language.
